Port of Oakland

Redesigning a suite of websites for the Oakland Airport, Oakland Seaport, and the Port of Oakland to embody the “Everyone’s Port” ethos

Overview

This project redesigned and built the oaklandairport.com, oaklandseaport.com, and portofoakland.com websites. The result is a seamless, engaging, and mobile-friendly user experience that showcases the Port's dynamic brand, "Everyone's Port." The new websites are not only easy to navigate, but are also highly secure and reliable.

Approach

This comprehensive multi-year project unfolded in a series of strategic phases, from Discovery and Planning to Visual Design, Development, and Implementation. Each phase was crafted to ensure that the final product meets the highest standards of accessibility, functionality, and user engagement. With a focus on intuitive navigation, elegant interface design, engaging tools, and high performance web platform infrastructure, the new websites serve as vital tools for stakeholders and the community, highlighting the Port's role as a leader in economic and cultural development. A key deliverable was the digital strategy, which defined Personality Statements and Primary Goals that were used as ever-present measuring tools for the designs.

Custom Tools and Robust Search

Technically, the new web platform incorporates advanced features and custom tools to enhance user experience and operational efficiency. For instance, the flight status feature at provides real-time updates, helping travelers stay informed and plan accordingly. And, the parking occupancy gauge offers real-time information on parking availability, making it easier for visitors to find and book parking spots. These features, along with a robust content management system, and strategic use of faceted filtering and searching, ensure that the websites are not only visually appealing but also highly functional, delivering a superior user experience.

My Role

This project was all-encompassing for the last 2 years. As creative lead, I was responsible for all aspects of this project from preparing the RFP, to handoff to the dev team and launch QA. I ran the stakeholder workshops, prepared the digital strategy, reimagined the information architecture, directed a team of designers, created additional design comps, managed the design system, and frequently stood in as project manager.
